Mehta, known for other works of fiction and journalism, gives an in-depth account of his formative years at the Arkansas School for the Blind in the 1950s. He writes that the school's isolation only furthered his withdraw from general society, yet his growth through the narrative also tells how a young, blind boy gradually nourished himself and his confidence to go out into the world with strong determination.
