The beginning strains the imagination, but if you can accept that, the rest of the book is better. The hero is a tortured soul, who needs someone to show him that he doesn't have to be. The hero, the heroine, and at least one minor character are burdened with excessive pride, which is the source of much of the conflict in the story. The author tells the tale in such a way that you care about the characters and want things to work out perfectly for them. The book is well-written and a pleasure to read.
