A small boy wants the new popular shoes. His grandmother says that they can't afford them. Slowly, almost every boy in his class has the new shoes. It's only him and another boy that don't.
He finds and buys a pair of them in a thrift store, but they're too small for him. He eventually gives them to the other boy that didn't have the shoes, either. Winter comes and they both run off in new boots.
Why I recommend it: The drawings are simple, not elaborate. It's constantly a current theme, a young person wants something that's popular and can't afford it. The home life isn't about two parents and a child. It's a grandmother raising the boy.
