First off, let me say that this is no "Women of the Otherworld" book. Second, let me say that this is a very good thing. I enjoyed the first few books of that series, and then it became increasingly predictable. Not awful, still readable, just... meh. "Omens" is a great start to a series by Ms. Armstrong that's going in a completely different direction. It's a murder mystery with elements of the supernatural, The "omens" experienced in the book are a means to an end, not an end in itself. There's plenty of good old-fashioned grunt work and leg work involved in investigating the murders. There are two great lead characters in Olivia and Gabriel and a host of supporting characters in the residents of the unusual town of Cainsville. I'm especially looking forward to finding out more about Cainsville. There's also a refreshing lack of lust and heavy breathing, something which is a constant irritant to me in a lot of urban fantasy. I'm eagerly awaiting the next Cainsville book.
