Although an interesting book, its coverage on scouting is somewhat scanty. For example, there is far more text on the American military actions in the Philippines during the last 19th century and early 20th centuries, then on scouting during the Indian Wars, which covered decades. Still, the incidents related are a good overview on the value of scouting.

I was very interested in the story of the capture of Filipino leader Emilio Aguinaldo by U.S. Army officer Frederick Funston, as that story might well have come out of a Hollywood movie. The story of this capture disagrees with the more well-known version of his capture aboard a U.S. Navy ship, which supposedly occurred under a flag of truce. I checked this out online and discovered this book's version was true. Makes you wonder why the true story is not more known. It may be because Funston was not a West Pointer, but a volunteer officer. If so, I give credit to the author, who was also a army officer, for relating the true story.
