When Bertie moved west in the laate 1770's she was secure in her love for her new husband, even if it meant living in a fort amid hostile Indian tribes. Then, in a night of terror, she was awakened by screams and scufflings outside. When all at last fell silent, Anton was nowhere to be found. Bertie's nightmare was just beginning, but she refused to give up hope that Anton was alive, and she resolved to stay alive for him as well.
