This novel is a masterful take on the iconic Diary of Anne Frank. Feldman posits a situation where Peter van Daan survives Auschwitz and emigrates to America where he hides his Jewishness. He marries a Jew, however, and finds himself in a psychiatrist's office when he discovers a copy of the Diary on his wife's nightstand and then goes to a performance of the play. In the Diary, we get only Anne's 13-year-old point of view; here we have Peter's view of life in the Annexe. Made me think about the Diary, the play and the film in an entirely new way.
