I read this as a teenager in the 1950s and recently enjoyed rereading some of it. He writes of his sources (1940s research by traveling to libraries, etc.), pp. xi-11 and rates them. His discussion of the middle border and Bleeding Kansas covers the ground concisely. The first half of the remainder of the book is about the James Gang and the latter half deals with the Wild Bunch.
I have the Bonanza Books edition that includes quite a few illustrations. Index, introduction.
