It's a crying shame this author only wrote six novels in this series. But then he's 89 now and didn't start the first one until he was 64. He wrote the last one when he was 84. I've read four of them now and enjoyed them all. Plus, I've learned something about this author's technique. So the ending wasn't as much a surprise as he may have thought it would be. As I stated in my review of his first book, "It's not over until it's over."
