This is a very different kind of Western. In the beginning I thought it would include no violence at all, it just seemed to be a story about a family traveling west after the Civil War to settle in Texas.

But towards the middle the violence started, not a lot, but enough to make that family's story interesting. Unlike a lot of Westerns, the protagonist family suffered in its growth as the children grew up. I won't say more, but there were no range wars, no Indian attacks, and things didn't always turn out the best for the family members. They experienced painful losses. And one killer got off scot-free. But I did end up enjoying the the book.
