Book Review of Legion of the Lost : The True Experience of An American in the French Foreign Legion

Legion of the Lost : The True Experience of An American in the French Foreign Legion
reviewed on

As for Foreign Legion memoirs, this one holds up simply for the American perspective from which it is written - as there have been few such experiences. That being said, one quickly understands why as the modern American "way" doesn't jibe with the ascetic course of the French Foreign Legion.

Salazar likens himself to an adventurer and warrior-poet but first he needs to find himself a neurotic copy-editor with a caffeine addiction. I lost track the number of spelling and grammatical errors contained in "Legion of the Lost." The fact that this book sits on library shelves is an embarrassment. One of the enjoyable moments was the "back and forth" written-in corrections by past readers with their comments - it was like an ancient precursor to an online discussion thread.
