The story is about a girl from the wrong side of the tracks born to lose. Cassie McBride's mother is an alcholic and doesn't have any love towards her daughter in the least. But as always, the underdog must win. Cassie McBride 15 years of age, goes to take her mother's place as a maid to help out at a fancy, rich household for an evening. As the story goes, the lady of the house, takes Cassie under her wing, employs her and shows real affection for the girl. Also, there is a nephew in the family named Roarke who takes Cassie's breath away when she see him. Roarke is Cassie's Knight in Shining Armour of sorts, who rescues her from advances from his brother, Trace.
As Roarke and Cassie are drawn together, they share a night of love and passion. Roarke's father finds out about their affair and all hell shakes loose. Roarke breaks away from the family and leaves, vows to find his own way in the world. Cassie is heartbroken, alone and pregnant by Roarke, who left her without a look back. Cassie McBride is determined to find a better life for herself and her baby. This story was exciting, considering is was written 1992. The author's way of telling about Cassie and the other characters was really good.
