With hundreds of Mediterranean cookbooks of every variety on the market, it's hard to imagine just how groundbreaking this slim paperback with hand-drawn illustrations was--but without it, Marcella Hazan would have sought a market for her work in vain. The recipes are quite straightforward, but the real value of the book is in the window into the Mediterranean dietary of the 1950s, and its painful contrast with postwar British cuisine.
