Since the mid-1990s, I've been enjoying Donna Leon's unique stories about the deeply moral Venetian policeman, Commissario Brunetti. The author makes her readers look at human nature, not just black and white, but also the various shades of gray. She calls on her readers to evaluate human nature in all its flavors and types.

In some ways, I thought this story more complex, with deeper meaning. Signorina Elettra gets caught doing something illegal (but compassionate). The wicked Lt. Scarpa may yet get caught in Elettra's web when he forces her to find a way to make him look good to Patta. We can only hope.

In past books, Guido's relationships with his family have been in the forefront; in this one, we explore his relationships with his coworkers. This story explores yet another conundrum. Who does a person owe their first allegiance to -- family or state?
