A fast-paced story set in the carnage of WWI. Lots of atmospheric detail about the bombing and the horrifying condition of the trenches. This time it's Lydia who gets imprisioned by the vampires and barely escapes thanks to Ysidro. Have to say that I'm getting a little bored with the continual theme of weaponizing the vampires and/or the revenants, although it is certainly a logical progression. Ysidro continues his obsession with Lydia, which is quite interesting...why is he so attracted to her despite his vampiric state? James and Lydia continue their moral dilemma about the vampires themselves...they need help to combat the revenants but accepting it from evil beings is complicit in that evil. It will be interesting to see what happens to James in the next one, as his superiors in the Foreign Office have to know it was him who foiled their plans.
