He had 4 daughters already and was told that the baby she carried would be a boy but in the time of delivery, the husband had to make a choice and so he chose the baby since it was to be a boy and the doctor said it would be more apt to make it before his wife and then it turns out it is a girl and the father turns away from her and goes to London to stay with the other girls and leaves her in the country with a cousin. so she does not know what loves is because no one has shown her any. it is very good book.
