The ambiance is that of a darker, magical Venice and I strongly recommend reading the books in this series close together to keep the "feel" of the parallel dimension with you as you read it.

This story was instantly gripping in the tale of the two lovers and their tragedy. And then, it moves into a love affair between a girl who's father is the intended target of revenge by a spirit. At first, you wonder why you are reading the story of Bartolome, but by the end, his story has become woven in with the other characters' lives in a story that is as imaginative and wonderful as it is breathtaking and sad.
