ISBN 1887942386 - Slam and Dunk books are suddenly in a bunch at the top of my to-be-read pile and, to my surprise, I don't mind. The characters are growing on me.

Slam and Dunk picnic with their siblings, Skip and Spin. The group decides to play tag until it grows dark. Spin wants to go back, but Slam and Dunk say the dark is fun and run into the woods. All of a sudden, the dark doesn't seem so great as a pair of big, bright eyes come toward them through the dark!

As usual, author Chris Sawyer and illustrator Dennis Hockerman pair up to write a good book that will engage young readers. That said, there's just the possibility that some young readers will find this suspenseful book a little scary. The text is simple, the font is large, the illustrations are bright and colorful, until they turn a bit dark and spooky. This book is also part of ISBN 1601438761 Hooked on Phonics Learn to Read K-2 Deluxe.
