Book Review of Where Is Thumbkin?: Over 500 Activities to Use With Songs You Already Know

reviewed on + 9 more book reviews

A great resource for teachers, homeschoolers and parents, this book includes 500 different activities to use with the songs you already know. There are many cross-curriculum ideas -- expanding the song to fit science, art, language, math, motor skills, drama, social studies, cooking and more. Book is divided by months; each month has suggested songs. Also divided by age group, with songs for 3s, 4s and 5 year olds in one section of the book and songs for toddlers in another section.

For example, one of the October suggestions for 3, 4 and 5 year olds is "Farmer in the Dell." For art, they suggest crayon rubbings, for cooking, they suggest making butter; for gross motor skills, they dramatic play using farm-themed props; for science, they suggest talking about the different types of foods that animals eat and allowing kids to look at grains and seeds through a magnifying glass.

There are so many creative ideas in here. I used it with my son when he was a preschooler and we had many hours of fun built around the activities in this book. It would be very useful to a homeschooler who is beginning to teach her toddler or preschooler.
