Book Review of The Creole Cookbook

This is a great little cookbook. The recipes are very good but the real treasure is the illustrations. The book is old and the food is from the American South and it definitely shows in the choice of drawings sprinkled throughout the book. They are folksy and homey and a sign of those times. There are plantation belles and their suitors shown in all their beauty and luxury but the gems are the "mammy" type Black women doing chores. This is a great book for those who collect time period cookbooks or those who are interested in American history in addition to food. The recipes that I have tried are very good, but creole cooking is not really my thing since I'm a vegetarian (they sure love meat and seafood).
