Blue Ridge Mountains is a range of the Appalachian Mountains stretching from Southern Pennsylvania to Northern Georgia. For this novel, it points to Pennsylvania Dutch country. It is said, one year when the heavens withheld rain and land became parched. Mary, favoured by the Lord and blessed among women, crossed the mountains to visit Zacariah and her cousin Elizabeth and from the heavens rain fell for 40 days to quench the thirst of the earth. This is the tale of two two young boys who lie in wait to see Mary cross the Blue Mountains at another draught stricken moment in the 19th century.
