As with her Black Magician trilogy, I found that I enjoyed the third and final book in the series the most.

If you've read that trilogy and are considering this one, know that this really is more of the same--so if that's what you're looking for, that's what you'll get: a comfortable black-and-white world and various plot lines from different characters' perspectives. Some characters are familiar, others are new.

I wouldn't recommend this novel as a stand-alone, and if you're new to Canavan, I'd recommend starting with the Black Magician trilogy, as Canavan refers to the background in those stories throughout this trilogy.
