Gerard Tsonakwa and Yolai'kia Wapita'ska are Abenaki Indian husband and wife sculptors whose masks and sculptures throb with the primal vitality and spiritual essence of the best "primitive art." Their work depicts the essence of the creatures of the world, calling forth the unseen spirits of Mother Earth, the Woff, the Bear, the Sun and Creation. Whether they hollow out space in the back of a mask or in stone or put hoops around masks and sacred signs in carvings, utilizing healing stones from all four directions, their work communicates their attunement to their native heritage AND their technical and creative artistic skills. This 62 page contains not only text about their work, but also dozens of images, both in color and black and white.
