This is great, quite different than most histories of the Civil War, most of which don't seem to understand the difficulties or the strategies of 19th century warfare. This details just about every imaginable battle, many I had never heard of. Sometimes, the minor skirmishes get more play than the larger battles (say, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg), maybe because those 2 just happened without a lot of strategy. In contrast, Vicksburg gets a lot of discussion. It has a map every couple of pages, showing the various battles and strategies.
