Children's historical novel set in Virginia about 12 year-old Will, whose whole family has died because of the Civil War (the men in the battle, the women from epidemics and insufficient food) so he has to go live with his uncle in the Virginian Piedmont, who refused to fight for the Confederacy - not so much because he sided with the Yankees as because he didn't believe in war - in other words, a conscientious objector before that term was even coined. Will thinks his uncle is a traitor, but comes to admire the man for his abilities and consistency.

Short (150 pages) but very well written.
