From the inside cover: "'So you're a pediatrician?' Bailey said to Pamela. 'Say, George, someone said your children are in the hospital. Is that right?'
George Pennington looked terrified. His wife, Julia, seemed first startled, then cautious. Woodruff's expression never changed, but his knuckles turned white.
Elaine Woodruff broke the silence. 'I heard something about that, too, Julia. There's nothing serious wrong with the children, is there?'
'No, it's not serious...'Julia looked warily at Pamela. 'You know how foreign service can be on the kids sometimes.'
Pamela felt that the conversation was filled with undercurrents just on the edge of her perception, that communication was going on at a level unknown to her. Julia had avoided talking about her children before, and so had George. Pamela thought it was odd...
