Solid biography of a forgotten horse racing great. Tod Sloan was the champion jockey of his day, a celebrity whose life was fodder for the press, and had a lasting impact on the sport by popularizing the "forward seat", a riding posture that is now dominant. After controversy ended his career, Sloan quickly faded into obscurity. The book is a decent overview of Sloan's life, but you constantly get the feeling that there's a lot of information missing or being skipped over. Still, the writing is good and the subject matter worthy. A worthwhile read for fans of horse racing and its history.
