reviewed on + 255 more book reviews

A short story published as a wee 5.25 x 4.25-inch, 88-page book in 1995 for Penguin\'s 60th anniversary. Also appeared in the 1993 collection Nightmares and Dreamscapes.

The story begins as a Raymond Chandler pastiche, and follows a private investigator named Umney as he goes about what he thinks is just another morning. He soon discovered that his life as he knows it is falling apart, and he\'s brooding alone in his office when he receives his final client... (If you\'ve read enough Stephen King, you can guess who that last client is.)
