Summary:
Kestral is a Valerian and the daughter of a General. She is given two choices: get married or join the military. Unfortunately, neither option seems to be that great. While watching a slave auction, she is stirred by the sigh of Arin, a Herrani. She impulsively purchases him. From this point forward, the focus is about the relationship between Kestral and Arin. Both seem to be falling in love, but their circumstances aren't right. The two are at war, both expected to fight for their own sides. Arin needs to survive as a slave, one who's bloodline almost overthrows the Valerians. Kestral has to make a choice that may be more than she originally bargained for.

My thoughts:
This book is fantastic. It's a true romance, with the building of characters the main focus. Kestral and Arin are fully developed and so detailed that I feel like I can understand their decisions and motivations. I was actually in tears at one point in time because I was rooting for the two of them to overcome the circumstances that they were in. Both characters are extremely intelligent and it's easy to get inside their minds as they calculate their next moves. Also, Rutkoski takes us into a whole new world. If building amazing characters was not enough, the world building rivals any science fiction novel without stalling the story. While I admit that the beginning is a little slow, I feel like this world is so familiar. She does an excellent job describing the setting and time without searching for the fillers. The ending is heartbreaking, so I definitely hope the next book comes out soon.
