This is the story of a highwayman set in England during the spat between King George II and Bonnie Prince Charlie, The Pretender. The historic era is there, subtly lurking in the background. Even so, our highwayman is the incarnation of Robin Hood who robs the rich and endows the poor with the fruit of his endeavors. Or, maybe he is the counterpart of the Scarlet Pimpernel who rescues the noble who has been falsely accused of collaboration with the Bonnie one. At any rate, this is an enjoyable novel replete with the chase, the charm of our Baroness author, sans the drudgery of historical detail: a delightful read for a sultry afternoon or a winter evening by the fireside.
