Young Thomas Edison spent every penny he earned on chemicals for his experiments. He worked on a train selling candy and newspapers and turned the baggage car into a moving laboratory. He also bought a printing press and began his own paper The Weekly Herald. Later he became a telegraph operator. When he was 22, Edison invented a special sort of telegraph, a stock ticker. From this he went on to the phonograph, the electric light, electric power system, motion pictures--over 1000 different inventions in all. To most people, Thomas Alva Edison was a miracle maker.
