Once again Hambly transports us back in time to 1830s New Orleans, so vivid you can almost smell it. This book is less grim than the last - while there is danger and ugliness everywhere, it's not so gruesome as before. I found the voodoo very interesting, especially the famous Marie Laveau, and January's conflicted feelings about his sister being a voodooiene. He isn't quite sure what to believe although there are a couple occurrences that indicate actual supernatural contact. While it didn't seem complicated when I first looked at it, I did find that I had to go back and look at the geneology chart in the front of the book to figure out who's who, there are a couple nasty ruthless mothers I kept getting confused. And since I am re-reading this whole series, I do know that Hannibal is going to live for at least another nine or ten books...it seems pretty doubtful given how sick he is here, but he's gonna pull through.
