Allegiances is an epic adventure novel set in 1861 about love, daring, treason, and high stakes told by Virginian born Navy Lieutenant Johnathan Wade. He becomes captain of the famous sailing schooner yacht America. Torn between the love of two women, he struggles to resolve his romantic dilemma and his love of the sea.
Sailing from Annapolis, Charleston, to Jamaica, he is stormed by spies, Union warships. Here is portrayed the dramatic first year of the Civil war at sea, the incredible torching of the Union warships at Norfolk, the battle for the Port Royal, the burning of Jacksonville, and the infamous Trent Affair--a conspiracy to bring England into the war on the side of the Confederacy.
Allegiances is utterly fascinating because it is accurately based upon the little-known history of the yacht "America" which did exist operatively in the first year of the Civil war. No ships log was ever found for her, and she was found abandoned until March 11, 1862 when she was found upon the coast of Florida (Dunn's Creek). Her owner of record, Henry Decie was thought to be her captain. It is more likely than an officer of the Confederate Navy was assigned to her since Decie had sold her to the Confederacy in April of 1861. It is not surprising that no record of this appointment has ever been found.
