Rise of the Horde (World of Warcraft, Bk 2)
reviewed I really like Christie Golden's Orcs! on + 8 more book reviews

Golden is a much better writer than Richard Knaak, as shows in her character development of the orcs beyond just mindless savages. I like how this has been carried over into the current WoW game. She really gets into the different orcs and gives them each a different personality just like humans. It is heartbreaking to read this story of how Thrall's father Durotan was gradually ostracized and betrayed by his own people. (The rest of the story is revealed in Lord of the Clans.) It is frightening to learn how the orcs became the First Horde and how they allowed demons led by Sargaras to pervert and change their ancestral shamanistic ways, and turn them into the unstoppable Horde that would not stop until everything in their path was destroyed. Watch in horror alongside Durotan while the orc people are betrayed by their own leaders and basically sold into slavery to Sargeras, who ultimately abandons them. Savor this story of a brave and honorable orc who alone chose to stand up to the tide of demonic lust that is the legacy of the Burning Legion.
