I was surprised to enjoy this one, as I found the first book to be a little rocky in places. This was a more solid story, as if the author had found her footing and was more confident in her world and characters. Detective Kara Gillian, summoner of demons, is investigating the apparent suicide of a fellow officer who might have killed his wife. What the more mundane humans don't realize is that his essence (I'm guessing it's similar to a person's soul) has been consumed by something arcane, which Kara has never encountered before. Then a prominent businessman and politician is found dead, seemingly by accident, but his essence is gone too. As the body count rises, Kara and her FBI friend Ryan find their investigations intersect, but struggle to make sense of the tenuous connections. Meanwhile, Kara is still trying to find a way to recover her comatose aunt's missing essence to her body. It's a good mystery with enough twists and turns to keep the reader guessing, and the resolution and climax have a satisfying punch.
