A "mixed marriage": What does that mean today? Sarah Friedman, raised as an observant Jew in New York City, falls for Ben Lonefeather, a man not only a gentile, but a Navajo. The phrase "two different worlds" comes to mind, and, when her parents are confronted with the seriousness of the situation, so does "worlds collide" and "it will kill your mother." The two meet when Sarah travels to the Southwest as buyer of Native American art for the family business. Car trouble near a Navajo reservation causes her path to cross with that of Ben, an artist who has been caring for the coyote pups he rescued after their mother was killed by a car. Wildly different geographies, backgrounds, and cultures cannot deter the couple's passionate, almost preordained, connection. Love versus familial duty is the crux of the matter, and while some readers may find the Jewish family's responses a bit stereotypical and its demands somewhat skin-deep (circumcision), others will cheer this cross-cultural romance,
