I read the third book of this series first and found it intriguing enough to go back and read the rest. This was the first of four books and it was Derek and Gina's story. Derek was one of the hunters hoping to find new recruits to fight demons while Gina was an adrenaline junkie/ action movie star wanting to test her limits by entering a reality show competition. Of course this reality show was really a way to test possible hunters. The test became a reality when the real demons showed up.

I'm sure movie makers were cringing at the opening chapter, screaming Thats not how movies are filmed! But remember, there are demons in this story so you will need to let go of reality for a while.

The story itself was interesting, especially because Burton had to cover a lot of background information and provide general rules of this world to the readers. The middle of the book kind of dragged on. I wasnt sure where Burton was going with it. It seemed too much was placed on Gina and Dereks uncertainty about their abilities to let people in. At some point I thought Gina was lapsing into a three year old and gave serious consideration to cease reading. The characters and interactions were rather flat even though there were things going on. But the story picked back up and then it was nonstop again. So Im glad I powered my way through the dull middle.

It was an iffy book. There were some steamy love scenes so if you are squeamish about dirty words and dirty deeds, this might not be the book for you. The writing was okay. Overall I dont regret reading the book but at the same time its not a book you have to read.
