Definitely not one of her best. While I love dark romances, "Shadows of the Night" pushes past "dark" and more into light sadomasochism with the hero's need for pain during sex. Quite off-putting and rather uncomfortable to read. It's rather a drag to be reading a love scene and all I can think is, "Eeeewww."
But much worse is the hero's insistence to stay in his run-down, creepy property, with little reason given for doing so except perhaps to make his new bride uncomfortable. It IS explained at the end of the book, but far too late to make it palusible at the time. It's one of those books where you actually spend time yelling at the characters, "So LEAVE the place! Why are you STAYING?" Frustrating.
I must add that I love most of her other books, especially "Veil of the Night" and "Music of the Night," which are wonderful.
