After reading and loving several of her Cajun books I had high hopes for this book and Sandra Hill really didn't disappoint. It took me forever to finish the book but that is my issue not the book's. If you have never read a Sandra Hill book before you absolutely have to. They are contemporary and funny....really funny. Her characters really have a life of their own especially the most awesome little old lady from the Bayou named Tante Lulu. She is such a riot and makes me want to read more of these hoping she will make an appearance swearing her love to Richard Simmons (she thinks he's hot!)
Anyway, enough about the secondary characters. This book manages to combine a woman who is known in the area as being "the crazy indian lady" even though she is not native american and an Ex-Navy Seal who grew up Amish. Sandra did a great job introducing me to Amish ways and Menonite ways in addition to a few interesting facts about one particular Indian tribe (sorry I would name them but can't remember off the top of my head) without making me feel like I was in high school again. A HUGE plus in my book.
Caleb Peachy is heading his own team of treasure hunters for the Jinx team and they are cave diving for hidden pearls. He thinks things are going to go pretty smooth even though he is back in his native area deep into Amish territory. He just figures he will get in and out really quick like but meets Claire. She is part of a group of preservationists who insists on making things go by the book and extremely slow as to not destroy any precious indian artifacts. He is a military man through and through. Do the job, do it well, and get it done quickly. That's Caleb's way. Claire's way.....um....work...work...work....oooooh is that a butterfly? If you know what I mean. She is a total free spirit and completely opposite of Caleb. Too bad they find themselves so attracted to each other they can't focus on the job at hand.
Like I said....good book....I am really becoming a serious fan of Hill.
