Book two of Naimi Novik's series about an unusual hero and his human companion and the love and loyalty between the two of them is just as good to read as Book 1, His Majesty's Dragon. This time focusing on their journey by ship to China where Temeraire was bred, this adventure gives the reader glimpses of the 1806 Empire of China and the cultural historical peek of a place where dragons are bred and treated as equals is an great read.

China has demanded the return of Temeraire, a rare Chinese Celestial Dragon, and the British Government, in hopes of establishing a foothold in the Empire, has agreed to send the dragon back. However, both governments underestimate the connection between Temeraire and Captain Laurence and the dragon refuses to go without him. Through dangerous attacks both by humans and an awesome sea serpent, the bond between Temeraire and Capt. Laurence holds strong. In addition to them, the book has a great cast of supporting characters, including the Chinese dragons and the humans whose duty is to protecting Temeraire and Capt. Laurence.
