He comes back from war, after missing a lot of letters, to find he has an unexpected son. His wife believes he rejected his son and sent love letters to another woman. His son would rather their neighbor was his real father. And his wife is trying to start an affair with his old enemy, to boot! He really does an amazingly good job of handling an angry, resentful wife and son, without ever acting like anything but a gentleman. He just handles laying down the law with the whole iron fist in a velvet glove thing... very well done.
