Excellent material ignored or glossed over by many current professors of Black Studies, in two parts Negroes in the CSA and Negroes under Federal Control. Exploitation occurred in both situations, but as always Black folk worked through their troubles. They fought with the Union Army for their freedom and the contemporary arguments for and against enlisting Blacks are summarized, the deciding point being the great need for soldiers in July 1862. On the other hand, some Blacks loyally served the CSA and were residing in the old soldiers' homes of various southern states in the 1920s. The author's reading of contemporary newspapers allow him to publish and analyze the changes in the price of slaves, 1861-1865. He also tempered his research in various archives by speaking with people who actually lived through the War Between the States. Extensive footnotes, brief bibliographical essay, and index.
