Just discovered this cookbook and am really excited about it. I've been collecting cookbooks for six months now that use whole grains and are from scratch instead of using store bought mixes. This is by far the best. It uses common ingredients, has basic down-home recipes as well as fun adventures (like peach soup with almonds - can't wait to try it!) It is filled with color photographs, helpful tips (i.e., to reheat plain pasta - immerse it in boiling water for one minute, drain and top with sauce), and step-by-step instructions. Great for a beginner, yet also has new info for some of us who have been cooking for years.

The veggie section shows a picture of each vegetable (and some of the varieties) along with nutritional info, what to look for in purchasing them, how to prepare, how to store, when they are at their seasonal best, and recipes using them.

Most of the breads use a combination of white and whole wheat flour. And the desserts are mostly fruit based with limited sugar. These recipes would be a good way to ease into whole grain, healthy eating if you're not used to it. Start out with basic recipes and add in some new tastes when you're ready. It really looks like fun!

I'm ordering another copy to have in my gift box. Can't decide yet who will get it. Wouldn't mind giving one to each family member on my gift list!
