I found Palace really interesting. On the one hand, he is steadfastly doing his best to be a detective, his dream job, regardless of the coming catastrophe. This could be looked at as noble - he's going to see that the murdered man gets justice, that the killer doesn't get to walk away just because society is breaking down. On the other hand, most everyone's going to be dead in a few months and he's forcing his co-workers to ignore it; maybe they would rather be spending time with their families (I'm thinking of the pathologist Fenton) instead of being persuaded by Palace to stay on the job. Palace goes down several rabbit trails, there's a couple real shocks, and something I thought would be connected isn't. I liked the pacing, I liked the mystery, and I believed in the world.
