This was okay, but could have been better. The good parts were very good, and the suspenseful parts were also Koontz as I know him, but there was too much conversation between the characters, way too much introspection, and some unneeded explanations of names.
The adults were too quirky, the kid was too smart - and too smart-a--ed - and too mature (I'd have believed the kid was 10, but not 6). And the humor seemed weird and forced, not funny.
