Hannah Butler has chosen to follow her father's veterinary profession, but her job, usually held by men, incites her mother's wrath. Mrs. Butler clings to a concept of English gentility in the east Africa of 1914 and pushes her daughter toward marriage. Hannah feels trapped between "propriety" and the work she relishes. But Hannah has a secret love, which, if satisfied, could put her in the position her mother desires for her. The area's most eligible bachelor, Garth Whitehead, has yet to recognize Hannah's feminine charms, but her job caring for racehorses at least gives her access to the man. When Dan Williams, the local missionary, brings a baby elephant to Hannah for care and boarding, she finds herself drawn to his quiet strength and agrees to correspond with him while he serves in the Great War.
