Garraty has carefully chosen selections from American Heritage magazine for their breadth of topical coverage and diversity of scholarly approaches. The combination of complementary articles provides the reader with a sense of the variety and richness of historical literature.

Garraty's insightful introductions to each article serve to place the events discussed in their proper historical context and to identify and explain the specific approach to writing and analysis taken by each writer. Numerous illustrations, cartoons, photographs, and examples of fine art add a visual dimension that helps bring history to life.
