This story introduces the reader to Anna Pigeon, who is a seasonal employee of the Glen Canyon national park in Utah. She came to the park to get away from New York and heal her broken heart from the death of her husband. Never quite fitting in, she goes about her days doing her job and not really making friends with anyone. On one of her days off, Anna's out hiking alone, is lost, out of water, and getting desperate when she hears a woman crying out for help. She finds the woman being beaten and about to be raped by three college boys who are there to party for the summer. Inserting herself in the middle to protect the woman, Anna is knocked unconscious. Upon awakening, she finds herself naked, with a concussion, and without water or supplies in a deep, natural well/hole in the desert floor. We find out how strong Anna really is, as is the human spirit and the will to live. Quite a few twists and turns throughout this book that keeps the reader guessing right up to the very end. Finally, it all makes sense how and why Anna decides to become a law enforcement officer for the U.S. national park system.

For anyone familiar with the Anna Pigeon series, this is a must read. For anyone not yet introduced to Anna, this is a great beginning to a wonderful relationship.
