Although this book was published before ALMOST EDEN, it refers to the main characters of that book, Light and Maggie Lightbody. Light was a half-breed who wasnt comfortable in either culture. He married an ethereal woman who seemed more fantasy than human. They moved far away from civilization onto Lights Mountain. Their love for each other became the stuff of legends.

In this story, Lorna is the great granddaughter of Light and Maggie. She has some of Maggies traits but also has a practical side. We are reintroduced to Cooper Parnell from RESTLESS WIND. Lorna lives in Light and Maggies home and believes that she was meant to continue the Lightbody legend by loving a man who would live with her on this same mountain.

Lorna spurns the local men, knowing that she will recognize her love when he arrives. However, when she tells Cooper that hes the one and they should live on Lights Mountain forever, Cooper is underwhelmed by the offer.

He recognizes that he cannot measure up to the Lightbody legend. Lornas father, who married into the Lightbody family, certainly hadnt measured up to either the family or Lornas expectations. Cooper thinks things have moved too fast (he and Lorna have only known each other a few days) and he leaves Lights Mountain and the young woman.

In the meantime, Adam Clayhill (Coopers father) visits Sylvia Parnell (Coopers mother) and threatens her that she must convince Cooper to take his rightful place beside him. Past history: After getting her pregnant, Adam abandoned this woman without marrying her. She and Cooper were shunned by the townspeople because Cooper was a bastard. Cooper despises Adam.

Lorna leaves her mountain and goes to Junction City; shes looking for the three men who have caused her much grief. While shes there, we get to read more about Bessie and Minnie (at The House) and Mr. McCloud and Mable.

To say this book is action-packed is an understatement; theres death and destruction along with a lot of near-misses. 4 stars
