This delightful compendium of pork lore, half serious and half joking, is dedicated to proving that one should not take the pig for grunted. Pigs, Ash hastens to say, have played a leading role in world history, from the sagacious sow who led Aeneas to the location of the city of Lavinium to the pig who saved the city of Gloucester during the English Civil War. The author includes chapters on pig calling, pig-related aphorisms and lexicons, literary porcines and the derivation of the toe-tickling game of one little piggy going to market. The many photographs, prints and etchings are likewise a delight.
